2025 year in review

It’s time for another year-in-review post. Somehow, the years fly by faster each year!

This year’s post will be brief, I hope! In last year’s post, one of my lowlights was getting COVID for the first time. Well, wouldn’t you know it, I got COVID for a second time in 2025. FFS.

I continued to travel back and forth to Buffalo regularly to take care of power of attorney things for my relative. This year was more odd in the sense that the change in US administration made cross the border less appealing for those of us on the Canadian side. If I weren’t in this role, I would not be visiting the US at all right now, and I won’t be attending any conferences or events in the US for the foreseeable future.

One of last year’s notes was the decision to not apply for MVP renewal. It’s been six months now since I’ve been out of the program and it has been remarkably “freeing” to not have that burden any longer. There are things I miss, and I had a great run, but I’m glad it’s over.

One of the biggest highlights in 2025 was finally getting rid of the plantar fasciitis that I’ve been dealing with since late 2020. I finally figured out how to rid myself of that. I had forgotten how nice it is just to walk and not even think once about my feet or pain.

One lowlight which led to a highlight was one of those mixed blessing kinds of things. Work was slow for a while from late spring to early autumn, and I took advantage of that downtime to golf more. I played 45 times, not 45 full rounds, as it was a mix of 9 and 18, but that’s way more than I have ever played in a year before. My handicap index at the start of the season was 19.3 and I ended at 12.1. Getting my game back felt amazing. I can’t wait for next year.

One of my crazier goals was to attain a distance of 2000 km or more in walking, riding, any form of exercise that could be measured in distance. I didn’t reach the goal, but I managed to get 1714 km which is closer than I thought I would get!

I started walking a lot in mid-November and have been aiming for 25 km or more per week. I’ve hit that target 6 of the last 7 weeks which is a great start for a new routine. That will be my goal for 2026. I started using the Strava app, and I can set goals like this and track them far more easily than I was able to track the goal last year.

Business-wise, I only picked up one net new client in 2025, and will be losing one that is moving from GP to another ERP in 2026, but that’s the way it will be in the Dynamics GP space from now on. The opportunities will dwindle as we get closer to its end of life.

Lastly, I’ve officially starting to plan for my retirement. I don’t have a date in mind yet, but I now can envision that happening within the next 5 years. It seems too good to be true that it might be that close, but I’m looking forward to planning what that looks like!
